Emergency Departmental Review

There have been no substantial changes made to the physical space or departmental design of the Campbellton Regional Hospital (CRH) Emergency Department (ED) since the hospital opened in 1991. As a result of regionalization and facility reassignment in Dalhousie, reductions in bed capacity, and changes in patient complexity; the CRH site initiated a review of its inpatient and outpatient functional plans. The original ED design was more suited to ambulatory cases that could be processed quickly with a very high discharge rate and little expectation for observation. Historically, the inpatient capacity on a regional basis had accommodated admissions for investigation and observation without putting pressure on the Emergency Departments.
