There have been no substantial changes made to the physical space or departmental design of the Campbellton Regional Hospital (CRH) Emergency Department (ED) since the hospital opened in 1991. As a result of regionalization and facility reassignment in Dalhousie, reductions in bed capacity, and changes in patient complexity; the CRH site initiated a review of its inpatient and outpatient functional plans.
The original ED design was more suited to ambulatory cases that could be processed quickly with a very high discharge rate and little expectation for observation. Historically, the inpatient capacity on a regional basis had accommodated admissions for investigation and observation without putting pressure on the Emergency Departments.
